I have had the pleasure of meeting so many incredible business owners in the short time that HLD has been open. One of my favorites; The Fabulous Sasha Gray of the Scattered Sasha Show and The face behind the incredible Lipstick, Margaritas, and Hairspray Facebook page. She has such an inspiring story! Check it out below then give her a follow on her socials you will not regret it!!
Love and Happiness,
Ash & the boys
I have an accidental business.
That probably seems a little strange, because usually one plans, researches, plans some more, stops for a while, drinks and thinks and plans some more and eventually, when all the stars align, the dust settles over you and karma flies by…you launch.
Yeah, I got confused.
Actually, I got hungry. And lemme tell ya…hunger does weird things to a girl.
I was working in Corporate America (you know the one….the ladder, the back stabbing, the PANTYHOSE), and knew that I either needed to get OUT or die sitting right there at that desk, in that dark little cubicle that was designed by someone who hates people.
So, against the better judgment of my husband and my checking account, I left. Like…just said, “Nope. I’m done.”
I spent the next several years hustling a direct sales business and part time job until I wandered into what gives my soul joy: Motivational Humor Speaking. And THAT was fabulous. I mean…I KNEW this was what I was meant to do and be and all those other feel-good things that go along with finding your path and knowing it’s the right one to take you to the RIGHT place.
Except my timing SUCKED.
My mom got sick.
I had a kid starting kindergarten.
My husband travelled.
And I had to say, “Nope…not right now.”
So I hung around and did the adult things we are all required to do. There’s no pretty picture here, just the hard, cold facts that sometimes you have to suck it up, do what’s on the ‘list’ and realize things will fall BACK in place….eventually. But I’m not a patient person, so it was very difficult to not be doing ‘something.’
I decided to start a blog and Facebook page just so I could have an outlet to write my words and post a few funny pictures every now and then. People seemed to like what I wrote, so that was encouragement and I continued. My Facebook page grew. My blog was read by 12 people, 7 of whom I didn’t even know. I thought….there MUST be a way I could gain some income from this online gig, keep writing and posting to Facebook.
Remember when I said I was Hungry? Well, I was hungry for a little bit of freedom from real life, and I had a hankering for the top-shelf tequila I could no longer afford to buy. Oh, and my telephone bill….I wanted freedom to upgrade…
So I did a little digging and found some cups, added one of my funny sayings to them and off I went to a vendor event, sure I would make money just by hanging out because EVERYONE would LOVE to have one of MY cups.
Except the event was outside.
And it rained.
Wanna guess how many I sold? Zero. Nada. Zilch. The big fat NONE.
I was thinking that all my friends and family would be getting cups for Christmas for the next 10 years, AND that I might just pop those bad boys on my Facebook page and see what happened.
Well, what happened was….I sold out in about 24 hours.
Yep. And I continued to do that until Facebook changed the algorithm and made it a little more difficult to reach a ton of people without advertising, but my business was born. I didn’t know it had been born for about 6 months, because I was working like a mad woman trying to figure out shipping, boxes, packaging, credit card payments, product photos, listing, address labels, and a ton of still OTHER things that go along with an online business.
I even discovered I had an “e-commerce” store. Last Year. Yep, after 3 years in business, I found out there was an actual name for what I had and it wasn’t ‘shop’, which is what I was used to saying (and explaining that my ‘shop’ was actually in my closed in porch got a little old, too).
As the business grew and other items replaced the cups, I decided to change the focus of my ‘shop’…errr, I mean e-commerce store to reflect more of my passion for Motivational Humor. The store now carries items that will make you laugh, inspire you, and make you think a little bit about life.
So while I definitely have an “Accidental Business”, let me encourage you to go with your gut, grab your passion by the collar and jump full force into what you believe in. And always remember these words:
I have no regrets….Just fabulous Experiences
Sasha is a redneck, barefoot, rum and tequila drinking Southern Belle. Still trying to figure out what she wants to be when she grows up, she knows that anything involving Margaritas is a top choice.
Raising a granddaughter, caring for a father who’s living in her yard and making sure her husband has clean underwear for all his travels keeps her busy, but she still scopes out recipes she'll never make on Pinterest, scrolls Facebook for old boyfriends and pretends she knows proper English.
She’s on Facebook as Lipstick, Margaritas, and Hairspray, on Instagram as Scattered Sasha and on ScatteredSasha.com, she blogs, sells a few special things and has the Forever Fabulous Journey.
